Why They Left the Bay Area
After more than a decade living and working in San Francisco's tech industry, this family found themselves in a situation that many remote workers know well. An apartment that once felt spacious suddenly had two full-time jobs, a young child, and a nanny all sharing the same space.
Remote work created a new question:
If you could live anywhere, where would you build your next chapter?
They made a list of priorities:
More space
Access to water and nature
A strong sense of community
Proximity to family
The opportunity to buy a home they would genuinely be excited about
The answer kept leading them back to Tacoma.
Why They Chose Tacoma
Although one of them grew up in Tacoma, the city wasn't simply chosen because it was familiar… It offered something they couldn't easily find in the Bay Area: a lifestyle that aligned with their priorities. Remote and hybrid work also changed the equation.
Years ago, Tacoma may have felt too far from Seattle for a daily commute. Once commuting became occasional instead of everyday, Tacoma became an incredibly compelling place to live.
Finding the Right Tacoma Neighborhood
One thing was non-negotiable:
A water view.
The search focused primarily on West Slope and Old Town, with Proctor also on the list of favorite neighborhoods. Ultimately, they found exactly what they were hoping for: a West Slope home with unobstructed water views, large west-facing windows, and close proximity to family.
The surprising part? The entire process happened incredibly quickly. Only nine days after deciding to move to Tacoma, they were under contract.
Because they were still living in San Francisco, the purchase happened almost entirely remotely. Video tours, a pre-inspection, lender coordination, and a competitive offer all came together in less than two days after finding the home.
Looking back, they say the speed wasn't what gave them confidence. It was having every question answered quickly and feeling informed throughout the process while working with Laura.
What Surprised Them About Buying a Home in Tacoma
Coming from San Francisco, the biggest surprise wasn't simply the price, it was the value. The Tacoma housing market still felt competitive, but dream homes that would have been extraordinarily expensive in the Bay Area suddenly felt attainable.
For this family, it wasn't about spending less money, it was about getting dramatically more for the money they were already prepared to spend… Finding a move-in ready home with unobstructed water views in their preferred neighborhood still feels remarkable.
What Life in Tacoma Is Really Like
The biggest difference has been quality of life;
-More time with children.
-More time with family.
-More access to parks, waterfronts, and outdoor spaces.
-Less time commuting and sitting in traffic.
-Daily life simply feels easier.
One unexpected surprise has been Tacoma's amenities. Before relocating, they worried they would regularly need to travel to Seattle for healthcare, shopping, or activities. Instead, they've found almost everything they need right here. "I was surprised by how little I need Seattle." That realization has become one of the biggest benefits of the move.
Tacoma vs. Seattle: A Different Kind of City
Many people assume Tacoma is simply a smaller version of Seattle. Their experience has been completely different. Tacoma has its own identity, its own neighborhoods, and a strong sense of community. It feels like a city that has matured and grown, with more restaurants, services, parks, and amenities than they expected.
Even the weather has been a pleasant surprise! The long winters they remembered growing up here feel much more manageable as adults, and the longer summer nights with gorgeous fall and spring colors make it totally worth it.
Advice for Anyone Thinking About Moving to Tacoma
Their biggest piece of advice is simple:
Think carefully about what you're optimizing for.
If your priorities include living on the West Coast, having access to a major tech hub when needed, spending more time outdoors, being closer to family, and enjoying a high quality of life, Tacoma deserves serious consideration.
They also believe Tacoma is consistently underestimated. Many people overlook the city in favor of Seattle without realizing everything Tacoma has to offer. For their family, it has been the perfect place to build a life.
Laura's Tacoma Take
One of my favorite parts of helping relocation clients move to Tacoma is hearing what surprises them after they've settled in. This family's story echoes what I hear again and again: people come to Tacoma for more space or a better housing opportunity, but they stay because of the lifestyle.
Whether it's walking along Ruston Way, spending weekends at Titlow Park, enjoying neighborhood restaurants, or simply having more time with family instead of sitting in traffic, many buyers discover that Tacoma offers a balance that's difficult to find elsewhere on the West Coast.
If you're considering relocating to Tacoma and wondering which neighborhood might be the right fit, I'd love to help you explore the city through the eyes of someone who grew up here and helps buyers make this move every day.
