Things To Do in Tacoma: Tacoma Rainiers

In this article we discuss the Tacoma Rainiers, another fun thing to do in Tacoma!

Take me out to the ballgame! Welcome to America’s favorite pastime backdropped by the breathtaking Mount Rainier. This is home to the Tacoma Rainiers – Tacoma’s triple-A Pacific Coast League team and triple-A affiliate team for the Seattle Mariners. They’re located in Tacoma, Washington and have been at Cheney Stadium since inception in 1960. They’re also the alma mater of Alex Rodriguez, aka “A-Rod.” And most importantly, the Rainier’s official mascot is Rhubarb the Reindeer.

The Stadium

Located next to Foss High School and Snake Lake in Tacoma, the Cheney Stadium holds 6,500 seats and has been one continuous franchise since its construction in 1960, with several affiliation changes along the way. The Tacoma Giants were the stadium’s first team and it welcomed the Tacoma Rainiers in 1995. The stadium is just 36 miles from the Seattle Mariners ballpark, one of the few closest triple A team to its affiliate MLB team in the country.

Going to a game.

Root, root, root for the home team! Enjoying a night out at Cheney Stadium can be truly magical and a refreshing escape from major league exorbitant costs and crowds.

An average ticket will cost between $9 to $40, depending on group and other discounts and seat location.

Where to Park

The most convenient option is to pay $10 per hour at Cheney Stadium. For free or street parking, home fans can search near the stadium like at Foss High School’s parking lot and the public parking lot near the stadium.

Food and drink

Perhaps the greatest joy of any baseball game is usually the hotdogs (pork or vegan options). But at a Tacoma Rainiers game, experience the local Pacific Northwest cuisine and craft beer scene like a local. Just a few of the food and drink options include:

  • Cascade Grill, the Narrows Catch, and Olympic Grill. At these restaurants, enjoy fish and chips for $8.50, crab cakes for $8.50, and clam chowder for $8.

  • The Red Hot Booth. Famous for their brats, check out the “Wurst Sausage in Baseball” for $8.25.

  • Ivar’s is a local seafood favorite and offers baseball fans “Ivar’s Dog,” a seafood hotdog with tartar sauce and coleslaw.

  • Other

  • The usual baseball favorites such as hot dogs for $4.50, nachos for $6, and popcorn for $5.

  • Vegan options. La Familia Cantina’s taco plate with no meat and garlic or french fries at Kidd Valley and Fowl Territory.

  • Coffee, lattes, and tea prices starting at $4 and up.

  • Soda (or “pop” for midwesterners) starting at $4 and up.

  • Domestic beers like Budweiser and Bud Light

  • Microbrewery and IPAs like Rainier, Seven Seas IPA, and Laurelwood Stout. Take advantage of Craft Brew Wednesdays for $5 beers from select breweries.

  • Peanuts, popcorn, and…seafood!
