Weather in Tacoma: What is the weather in Tacoma like in the winter?

In this blog post we will discuss what the weather in Tacoma in winter is like. We will prep you on conditions, what to wear and what to do!

Winter Weather in Tacoma:

During winter, the temperature in Tacoma likes to hang out in the 40s (fahrenheit), occasionally dipping into the 30s, or rising to the low 50s. It is often gray and rainy, although storms are less frequent, our precipitation prefers to come down in the form of a drizzle.

What to wear in winter in Tacoma:

If you intend to brave the outdoors, plan accordingly! The hooded rain jacket is a staple for the Pacific Northwest, and we often layer a puffy coat underneath to keep warm. While it might make more sense to use an umbrella, most locals opt for the convenience of a coat as opposed to taking a chance on your umbrella getting blown away on a windy winter day. Boots to keep the rain out of your shoes will come in handy, and you will probably need a pair of snow boots if you want to frolick in our (although infrequent) beautiful snowstorms!  We also recommend putting on a comfy sweater and cozying up indoors with a good book!

What to do during winter in Tacoma:

Now is the ideal time to get to know your city, from the inside! Some of our favorite Tacoma local activities to do in winter include:

  1. Taking a dance class: We recommend salsa at Tacoma Dance Studios, or a free line dance lesson at Steel Creek, yeehaw!

  2. Check out one of our many museums: Tacoma Art Museum, Tacoma Children’s Museum, Tacoma Glass Museum, Foss Waterway Seaport, and more!

  3. Take a hot yoga class: We love Expand Yoga on 6th Ave! Spend an hour pretending you're in Hawaii, and walk outside after, finding yourself inexplicably grateful for the rain and cold hah!

  4. Hit the slopes: Grab your skis or snowboard and take a day trip to Crystal Mountain, or spend the weekend in White Pass cutting tracks into the hills!

Things to prepare for in winter in Washington:

Although storms don’t happen too often, we recommend having safety gear such as flashlights, water and snacks on hand in case anything happens such as the power going out, or a snowstorm keeping you inside for a couple days. Extra points if you buy a subaru with all weather tires to show that you’re really about it!
