Coming Home to Tacoma

Some people spend years trying to figure out where they want to live. For this homeowner, the answer was always Tacoma. After originally moving to the city at 21 and falling in love with life in a tiny studio apartment, Tacoma never really left their mind. Even after relocating to Colorado, the goal was always to come back.

"I've always loved Tacoma. It's close to everything, and it always felt like home."

The move wasn't just about changing states. It was about returning to a city that already held memories while creating an entirely new chapter.

Buying a First Home in Tacoma

The biggest concern wasn't choosing a neighborhood or finding the perfect house… It was wondering whether homeownership was even possible.

"Owning a home didn't feel like something I was financially capable of doing. It just didn't feel like it was in the cards."

Like many first-time buyers, there were plenty of expectations about what a budget should buy and plenty of disappointment along the way. The search included North End, Hilltop, East Tacoma, Dome Top, Lincoln, and Stadium. Every neighborhood had something to offer, but finding the right combination of location, character, and value took patience. After three months of looking, the right house finally appeared.

Finding the Right Tacoma Neighborhood

The home they purchased sits in East Tacoma near the Dome Top neighborhood, offering quick highway access and many of the features that had been on the wish list from the beginning; A fireplace, a garage, a house that felt like the previous owners had genuinely cared for it. Looking back, that's exactly what made it feel special.

The Tacoma housing market was surprisingly varied. Homes within the same price range could feel completely different, and it took sorting through plenty of duds before finding what they describe as "our diamond."

Colorado vs. Tacoma Home Prices

Living in the mountains of Colorado meant homeownership looked very different.

"We could only afford condos in Colorado. In Tacoma, we were able to purchase a remodeled standalone house."

The difference wasn't simply about price. It was about possibility… Instead of compromising on space or settling for something temporary, they found a place that felt like a long-term home and a future worth investing in.

What Life in Tacoma Is Really Like

One of the first things they noticed after moving back was how easy it is to build a life here. Tacoma is large enough to have everything they need but small enough that daily errands never feel overwhelming. Days off often include browsing Lapis, spending time in Proctor, grocery shopping at Metropolitan Market, Whole Foods, or Trader Joe's in University Place, and stopping for coffee at Olympia or Lander.

Recently, they discovered Svette Sauna and added it to the growing list of favorite local spots. What stands out most, though, is the landscape itself.

"I love that there are trees everywhere. I can look out my backyard and see ten different trees."

That tree canopy, combined with access to parks, neighborhoods full of character, and the nearby Puget Sound, creates a lifestyle that feels distinctly Tacoma.

A Different Kind of Weekend

These days, weekends look different than they used to! They're spent planting a garden, painting rooms, watering plants, decorating, and slowly making the house feel more like home.

“There's something deeply satisfying about putting time and energy into a place that's yours. It feels really good to be putting money and time into something that's mine. I'm not investing in someone else's future anymore. Everything I'm doing is investing in ours."

Why Tacoma Still Feels Like Home

Even after living elsewhere, Tacoma turned out to be exactly what they remembered. It still has the neighborhoods they love, the parks that bring back memories, and the feeling that there is always another coffee shop, restaurant, or small business waiting to be discovered. Wright Park remains a favorite, not just because of its beauty but because it sits close to that very first Tacoma apartment where the story began.

Advice for Anyone Thinking About Moving to Tacoma

"If you're thinking about moving here, I hope you love it as much as I do."

Tacoma has a way of surprising people. It's close to the Puget Sound, full of unique neighborhoods, surrounded by trees, and packed with locally owned businesses that quickly become part of your routine. For many people, it's a hidden gem. For some, it's simply home.

Laura's Tacoma Take

One of the things I love most about this story is that it isn't just about relocating to Tacoma. It's about reaching a milestone that once felt not possible.

I hear from so many first-time buyers who wonder if they'll ever find a home that feels worth the investment. The Tacoma market certainly has its challenges, but every once in a while there's a house that checks the right boxes and reminds you why the search is worth it.

I also love how this story highlights something that's difficult to capture with statistics alone. People don't fall in love with Tacoma because of one landmark or one neighborhood. They fall in love with Saturday mornings at their favorite coffee shop, evenings spent in the garden, walks through Wright Park, and the feeling of building a life in a place that feels both vibrant and grounded.

If you're considering moving to Tacoma or buying your first home here, I'd love to help you explore the neighborhoods and find the one that feels like home to you.
